How to Find True Love at Ireland’s Famous Matchmaking Festival
Photograph: Intro Matchmaking website. A woman sought a full refund of her joining fee from a dating agency in the small claims court after she claimed the agency failed to provide her with the service she had paid for. Jacinta McNevin claimed, that despite signing a contract that she must be willing to travel up to 90 minutes to meet a match at a halfway point, she had verbally told a representative from Intro Matchmaking that she requested to meet men in the Dublin area only.

Many single people in their 30s and older find bars and clubs hostile environments in which to meet somebody, and can find themselves increasingly isolated and lonely as the rest of their friends pair off, settle down and have children. Thomas 35 was single for over a year when he heard about a matchmaking agency, Intro, and signed up. I had heard some bad experiences of internet dating, but I liked the idea of the introductions agency because it was very discreet.
Having been in two serious long-term relationships, Thomas found himself single while most of his friends had settled down with partners and young families. The idea came to Maycock on a Saturday night out in her local bar, Gibneys of Malahide, when she noticed a well-dressed, attractive guy aged around 40 clutching a pint near the bar. She assumed he was waiting for friends or a partner but noticed over the course of the night that he was still standing there alone and realised he was trying to meet somebody.
Aware that men tend to be shy of joining online dating sites, the couple decided to build their agency and brand around men. Today Intro has members on its books ranging in age from 22 to Rena even had a call from a year-old man last week interested in signing up and, she points out, there may be interested women in their 70s and 80s. The main difference between matchmaking agencies and online dating sites, according to Maycock, is that the agencies accept only those who are actually available and looking for a relationship.

My name is Willie Daly and I am a third generation traditional Irish matchmaker: a gift I inherited from my father and his father before him. On the west coast of Ireland, just a few miles from Lisdoonvarna in County Clare , I live on a small elevated farm with horses, ponies and donkeys within view of the Cliffs of Moher , the wild Atlantic Ocean of our own Liscannor Bay and the beautiful, spellbinding, magical Burren.
I have been matchmaking for over 50 years and am proud to say I have matched over couples in my lifetime. Matchmaking is in my blood and I am fortunate to have inherited the skills of my father and grandfather. Like them, I know instinctively what makes a good match. The traditional tools I use are intuition, subtlety, and an understanding of human nature.
When you contact me I will provide a simple matchmaking form for you to fill in and return to me. I will then place it into my year old lucky love matchmaking book. Culture Trip stands with Black Lives Matter. Far from the world of Tinder, the lively Dublin nightlife scene, and almost any other modern-day take on romance you care to mention, Lisdoonvarna hosts an annual autumn festival aimed, traditionally, at helping lonely rural farmers to meet a match from outside their immediate area. Despite being viewed as something of a beloved national joke, however, Lisdoonvarna has modernised substantially in recent years. The town has always been a tourist spot, almost exclusively because of its spa water, which offers the other main attraction aside from the festival.
Another way of putting that is that the festival runs for over 12 hours a day, for the best part of a month. Back then, matchmaking was a far more serious undertaking; one that operated during a lull in a busy year of manual labour, and represented a rare chance for people in the area to meet eligible partners from outside their own small communities.
With impressive numbers of attendees in recent years, the festival has become one of the largest of its kind in Europe. Around 40, people typically attend over six weekends of the festival, with modest matches made by matchmaker Willie Daly from the hub, the Matchmaker Bar. Of course, the festival has changed substantially since , as has Ireland itself. There have, however, been some recent issues around the matchmaking side of the festival.
In , organisers struggled to attract enough men to the event , and drew complaints from attendees as a result.

As long as people have entered into relationships, people have been matchmaking—you may even have had a go yourself! Britain’s early tribal groups arranged marriages as a strategic tool to ensure their inheritance of, and continued dominance over, land, wealth and status. The consent of the future bride and groom was of little to no importance to these matchmakers, and all of the arrangements were simply made on their behalf. A page from Decretum Gratiani.
